20th December 1999 - ‘First Local Meeting’

Inaugural meeting of the ‘then’ Independent Traders Association - 16 Businesses attended.
The IBA commenced through the local business people decision to formalise a lobbying association for Radford and district businesses. Steve Wakeling voted IBA General Secretary (Voluntary Unpaid Officer).



January 2001 - ‘1st IBA News Letter’

Produced by Steve Wakeling & John Russell IBA Vice-Chairman and distributed to all IBA members by Steve Wakeling with support from Gerry Gardner IBA Secretary and IBA Business Consultant * IBA achievements conducted covertly with no funds supported by donations of money from John Russell, Andrew Hill, Andrew Schlich, Juliette Abrams Gerry Gardner and by present General Secretary and IBA Secretary.

October 8th 2001 - Public Meeting - ‘Improving Local Business’

Indian Community Centre – Rawson Street New Basford
After less than one month after September 11th 2001 75 businesses attended with guest speakers Pauline Davis – NDC Chief Executive, Irfan Ahmed - Lilac Properties, Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed - Project Rahnama, Mr. Butt - Chairman, Butt Foods Limited, Lenton, Mr S Gupta - Secretary Indian Community Centre and Andrew Hill Managing Director - William Hill (Builders & Construction Ltd) and IBA Chairman. The meeting was organised by the IBA to quell racial tension in the area after the September 11th situation in the USA.
“The IBA is the first local organisation to engage the whole communities of Forest Fields and New Basford in particular the Asian Business Community” Promotional displays including NDC, Business Link, FEBA, NBV, Nottingham Links, C & R Enterprise Ltd, Nottingham Links and AT Alarms organised by IBA Officer

August 2002 - Canning Circus Pub Watch – ‘Launch Day’

Three Wheatsheafs Inn, Radford
34 local Radford & Hyson Green licensees attended the IBA launch of the Canning Circus Pub Watch. Pauline Davis attended as the specially invited guest speaker.
The request for such an organisation was at the behest of NDC based licensees and further requested by the NDC Chief Executive Pauline Davis who attended an IBA Public Meeting organised by Steve Wakeling the (Seconded IBA Officer) working with First Enterprise Business Agency.

February 2004 - ‘Canning Circus Pub Watch’

Held at the Jolly Higglers Inn Radford
IBA secured additional funding for the Canning Circus Pub Watch to extend the IBA/NDC Lord Mayor of Nottingham’s Charter for the Licensed Trade. Area inclusive of Canning Circus, The Park, Radford, Lenton, Dunkirk and parts of Hyson Green.
The ‘Charter Certificate Awards’ concept is supported by NDC, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Police Force, The University of Nottingham, The Nottingham Trent University, both Student Unions, Derwent Housing Association, Greater Nottingham Partnership and First Enterprise Business Agency.
The IBA initiative in partnership with NDC to reduce Crime Drugs and Racism is identified by Central Government as a creative and vital project in the works against social issues. It is believed that local residents and the large student population will greatly benefit from the ‘Charter Awards’.

Charity Fund Raising

The Independent Business Association (IBA) now supports its chosen local charities with donations made by business at all Networking Events. During 2004 the IBA supported both the Royal Society for the Blind and the Nottingham Deaf Society with financial donations. The Independent Business Association would like to thank all of those business people who have helped support these local charities.
